    • Death: Obituary: The Evening News, Sault Ste Marie, MI. Thursday September 27, 1928. Thomas Banes, a resident of Chippewa County for over 50 years, passed away Sept. 23, 1928, at the home of his daughter, Mrs George A. Smith of McVille. He was 68 years of age. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors are seven daughters; Mrs George (Ethel) A. Smith, Mrs. Fred (Evaline) McDonald and Mrs. Joe (Mary) Smith of McVille, Mrs Hiram (Myrtle) Potter of Rudyard, Mrs Ray (Etta) Murphy of Pontiac, Mrs D. H. (Alice) Niles of Flint. Mrs M. (Idena) McLean of Sault Ste Marie. Burial was in the Pine Grove Cemetery, The service was conducted by Rev. Hubbard of Pickford.

    Notes:

    In October, 1879 Thomas Banes (as spelled in the Rudyard Centennial 1883-1983 The First Hundred Years) Purchased 160 acres of land adjoining what was later M-48 from Judson Smith. Smith had purchased the land from the Government in 1876 for $1.25 an acre. Other early settlers such as Nicholas and Theodore Sprague, and Sam Peffers, had also purchased their acres from Smith for $4 an acre. Thomas Banes paid $640 for the 160 acres, to give some idea of land prices at the time in the Strongville area. He cleared the land and built a log house. Thomas and Mary Jane built a new home on the same land on M-48, after all their children ( 8 Girls) were born. A few years later Banes sold the farm to Marcia E. Potts and moved to the Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. Where he ran a Stage Line and Hack Service. Thomas Banes was a very good with horses and an excellent Teamster, as acknowledged by various neighbors.

    Theodore Sprague was Thomas Banes Brother in-law. Theodore Sprague married Prudence Banes in Exeter, Ontario Canada.

    Thomas Banes was in the household of Hiram and Myrtle Banes Potter and family in the 1920 Census. This was his original farmstead. Hiram and Myrtle had bought or traded for this farm from Mrs Potts.

    Thomas married Mary Jane Stevens on 15 Sep 1880 in Saint Clair County, Michigan, USA. Mary was born on 12 Jan 1855 in England, United Kingdom; died on 27 Mar 1912 in Sault Ste.     Spelling of Susannah Fargisson as shown in the IGI file at the LDS Church. Also have a record of it as Susannah Sargisson. The F and S in some forms of writing look a lot alike. We think she is Buried in the North West Section of Bond Head Cemetery, Durham Co, Clarke Twp, Newcastle, Ontario, Canada. There are a lot of very Old Headstones in this Section and unable to read the Inscriptions on many of these Head Stones, they are mostly Limestone and badly weathered. Bond Head Cemetery has no record of this burial
