East Wawanosh Township lost one of its pillars last week as Ernest Russell Snell passed away suddenly on July 1, 2008 at his home. He was in his 93rd year. The son of the late Gordon and Ella (Youngblut) Snell of East Wawanosh, Mr. Snell was born on Aug. 24, 1915.

Ernest will be remembered as a businessman in the Westfield community having begun many farm and agribusiness ventures in his lifetime. He was also active in local politics, having served on East Wawanosh and Huron County councils. Mr. Snell and his family were also strong supporters of Westfield Fellowship Church.

Ernest began his career with the purchase of a 100-acre farm in 1939 where he and his then-new bride Anna (McDowell) Snell established a chicken business in Westfield. The business began with 100 leghorn hens, but by 1944, had expanded to a three-storey chicken house. Between 1945 and 1946 the Snell's began a hatching business, then began the feed business in 1949. After Mr. Snell closed the chicken business, the Snell's began a farm implement business, converting the chicken building into a service shop in 1957.

In 1960 Mr. Snell took his first step into local politics, being elected to East Wawanosh council in 1961. In 1963 he began a first term as reeve. Mr. Snell stepped down from his position as reeve in 1966, citing business reasons as the cause.

Mr. Snell eventually returned to local politics when he was re-elected to reeve in 1985, 1988 and again in 1991. In 1987, Snell Investors Ltd., of which Mr. Snell was the president, purchased "the Humphrey Subdivision" in Belgrave. In 1988, the first of the 38 residential lots was sold.

Snell Feed and Supplies Ltd. continued to operate after Ernest's retirement.
