Leonard McDowell - marriage register.
For generations our family we were told that back in 1862 there was a travelling Preacher/Minister in the area. William and Phoebe took him in and he lived there while he was preaching at the Westfield Church. (I'm assuming that it was an honor to be able to have the Minister stay at your house back then.) The story goes that during his stay he and Phoebe had an affair and she became pregnant.
When this was discovered the older boys John. Robert and William tried to attack the Preacher. He took off and the boys chased him almost to the end of East Wawanosh Township were he disappeared and was never seen again.
This story was passed on up until 2005 when I found Lenard's Marriage Register which showed his Mother was really Mary Jane. (Oldest daughter of William and Phoebe)
As far as the story about the travelling Preacher and the boys chasing him out of the Township we will never know if there is any truth in that.
Back in 1862 a 22 year old girl getting pregnant outside of marriage would have been a real scandal.
I do believe that the father must have been someone from outside the area or he would have suffered the wrath of Mary Jane's brothers.
