Obituary
Mrs. William McKnight
The entire countryside was largely represented at the funeral of Mrs. Margaret McKnight, aged 78 years which took place on Tuesday, July 18th, at 2 p.m., from her late residence, Seventh Line, Cavan; her pastor, Rev. H.R. Williams, B.A., of Grace Presbyterian Church, and Rev. W.W. Jones, B.D., of St. Andrew's United Church, jointly conducting the service.
Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Hampton, and was born and brought up on the Fallis Line, practically all her life having been spent in the vicinity. Fifty three years ago next October the marriage of Margaret Jane Hampton and the late William McKnight was solemnized and for the past forty years the large and comfortable red brick residence, surrounded by the fruitful acres on the Seventh Line, Cavan, has been the family homestead.
Predeceased by her husband, whose death occurred eight years this month; by four of their family including one child who died in infancy; a daughter, Mamie, who reached the age of sixteen years; and two sons, Eldridge, of Cavan, and William, of Vancouver, B.C., who passed away four years ago while on a visit to Seattle, Washington; Mrs. McKnight is survived by two sons, Robert J. and John H, of Cavan; and by two daughters, Mrs. Ernest Armstrong (Margaret) of Cavan, and Miss Ethel at home; also by eight grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Other immediate surviving relatives include three sisters, Miss Mary Hampton at the homestead; Mrs. Elizabeth Armstrong and Mrs, (Dr.) L.H. Rea, both of Millbrook. Two sisters, Rosanna and Agnes, and two brothers, David, who was the principal of the school at Millbrook for nearly fifty years, and William who lived in the States, were previously deceased. The flag at Whitfield's School was at half mast in Tuesday, July 18th, as one of the many tributes shown to the deceased; her daughter, Miss Ethel, having successfully taught there for a period of twelve consecutive years.
Mrs. McKnight remained bright and cheerful throughout her long illness. She was a kind and loving mother, and showed deep appreciation and gratitude for the loving care and attention shown by her family. A faithful member of Grace Presbyterian Church, regular in attendance, and actively interested in its organization, so long as health permitted. Mrs. McKnight gave generous support to the church of her choice and with her daughter, Miss Ethel, frequently extended the hospitality of her home to the Women's League on the occasion of their monthly meetings.
The pall bearers were chosen from intimate friends of the family and included Messrs. A.J. Henderson, Harry Patterson, L.W. Smith, Charles Gardiner, Joshua Whitfield, and Wesley Williamson. Bearing the flowers were eight relatives of the deceased: Thomas James and Joseph Whyte, William and Frank McKnight, Robert and Osborne Bannon, and Reginald Woodward.
Floral offerings were from the Women's League and from the Sunday School of Grace Presbyterian Church, and from "Golden Sheaf" Rebekah Lodge, and from many friends.
Internment was in the family burial plot in the Presbyterian church cemetery, Millbrook.
Among those from outside points attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. William Reid, Mrs. Chas. Reid, and Mr. Kenneth Reid, of Reaboro; Henry Johnston and his sister, Mrs. Arthur Burry, of Toronto, both resided in Millbrook in child bond days and were frequent visitors at the McKnight homestead, children of a former pastor of the deceased, the late Rev. William Johnson; Mrs. William Bannon and son, Osborne, of Orono; Mr. and Mrs. Frank McKnight, Mr. and Mrs. William McKnight, Mr. and Mrs. William James, and Mr. and Mrs. Percy Smith, of Peterborough; Mr. Reg. Woodward of Port Hope and Mr. Robert Bannon of Peterborough.
